Designing Your Custom Chesterfield: Where to Begin

Custom furniture should feel exciting — not overwhelming.

At Chesterfield NYC, every piece is made to order. That means your sofa, banquette, or chair is built specifically for you. But “custom” doesn’t mean complicated. It simply means you have options.

There are two ways to begin.

Option One: Start With a Signature Model

Many clients begin with one of our established Chesterfield silhouettes, a shape they already love.

From there, we tailor it.

You can adjust:

  • Length and overall scale

  • Depth for a more formal or relaxed sit

  • Cushion configuration

  • Leather selection

  • Nailhead finish

  • Leg style and stain

  • Tufting details

Think of this as refining a classic. The foundation is there — you’re simply shaping it to fit your space and lifestyle perfectly.

For many homeowners, this is the easiest and most intuitive way to go custom. You start with something proven and make it entirely your own.

Fill in the form at the bottom of the product page of the model that you want to customize and we will get back to you with details and a quote.

Option Two: Design From Scratch

If your project calls for something more specific — or completely unique — we can begin with a blank page.

This is especially common with:

  • Banquettes built wall-to-wall

  • Curved or corner installations

  • Hospitality projects

  • Rooms with unusual proportions

In these cases, we design around your exact dimensions and architectural needs. Every measurement, every proportion, every detail is considered from the ground up.

This is custom in its purest form, built specifically for your space.

How to Make the Process Easy

The key to designing custom furniture without stress is simple:
focus on feel first, details second.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this piece for conversation or lounging?

  • Should it feel formal or relaxed?

  • Will it anchor the room or blend quietly into it?

  • How do I want the leather to age over time?

Once those decisions are clear, the rest becomes natural.

You don’t need to know every measurement or construction detail. That’s our role. We guide you through proportions, scale, and material choices so the final piece feels effortless.

A Piece That Belongs

Whether you begin with a model and refine it, or start entirely from scratch, the result is the same:

A Chesterfield that feels intentional.
Balanced within the architecture.
Designed for how you actually live.

Custom isn’t about adding complexity.
It’s about removing compromise.

If you’re ready to explore the possibilities, you can see examples and design options on our Custom Designs page.

And when you’re ready, the process always begins the same way - with a conversation.
